Since my 2 1/2 year old son was diagnosed with peanut and egg allergies about a year and a half ago, I've been on the lookout for great "allergy free" products. Just after his first birthday we found out the hard way he was allergic to peanuts. After further testing we found out he was also allergic to eggs. I thought he had eaten his first and last birthday cake, along with many other treats kids enjoy.
To my surprise, it hasn't been hard to modify his diet while at home, but the hard part is when we go out. While we've found many great restaurants that he can eat at, it 's the birthday parties and the family gatherings that seem the hardest! From telling everyone "not to feed him this or that" to making a 2 1/2 year old understand why he can't have the cake is a task.
That is why when I found boxed cake, brownie, pancake and frosting mixes by Cherry Brook Kitchen in my local grocery store I was excited! Not only were they free of many allergins, they tasted good to! The mix is as simple to make as any other boxed mix in the store. Now if only we could get other parents, especially of school age children, to become aware of such products out there, bringing treats into schools and to parties could become easier!
I would love to hear from others about great allergy free products. Please post your great local and national finds!
